Sightings of UBs began to come in and Looker assigned trainers to their capture. It seemed that they were beginning to appear in groups. Nuztai was assigned to Verdant Cavern, where four of the mysterious UB-02 Beauty were said to be hiding. To make sure he could complete his living ‘dex, Nuztai swore to capture all four, giving him something to trade with the other trainers to obtain any UBs he wasn’t assigned to.
Nuztai’s strategy proved slightly dangerous. He would lead with Gadreel using Yawn, but the Pheromosa would respond with Bug Buzz, severely injuring Gadreel each time. He would then switch to Mary while the Yawn did it’s work, and would then switch to Bouncee, who would weaken it with Trop Kick until they could be caught in Beast Balls. All four were successfully captured, and Nuztai would fully heal his team between battles. He made sure to give extra care to Gadreel for taking such severe first turn punishment.
After reporting his success to Anabel and Looker, Nuztai continued on his personal mission while awaiting word of another sighting. He decided that he would inspect the Ruins of Life on Akala for some sign of this island’s guardian. Fortunately, it seemed word of his goal hadn’t reach the locals yet, and they put up no resistance as he made his way to the ruins.
Upon reaching the altar, Nuztai reached out and placed his hand on the statue. A bright light shone behind him and he turned to find Tapu Lele. He sent Gadreel down and started with Yawn. Tapu Lele launched a powerful Moonblast, followed up with Nature’s Madness, but Gadreel withstood, launching a Psychic blast at Lele, who then fell asleep. After another Psychic blast, Nuztai healed Gadreel and chucked a Dusk ball.
Tapu Lele broke free and attacked with Nature’s Madness. Nuztai further healed Gadreel, who was struck again. Gadreel then Yawned, dodging another Madness attack. Nuztai healed Gadreel just before being struck with a Moonblast, but Tapu Lele was asleep once more. Nuztai began a Dusk Ball assault, but Lele still awoke and began attacking once more.
Gadreel Yawned again, and Nuztai stalled by attempting another Dusk ball. Lele broke free and hit with a Moonblast and fell asleep. Nuztai risked a swap to Whirly, hoping to sneak in a Wake-up slap for a touch more damage. But Lele woke up and used it’s Madness on Whirly. Whirly still got the hit in, however, before being struck again and swapped out, barely conscious. Rufus hit the field to stall while Nuztai healed Gadreel once again. After a pair of Moonblasts, Rufus was almost down as well, and Nuztai swapped back to Gadreel.
Gadreel took another Moonblast, Yawned, and was hit with Extrasensory. Nuztai burned another Full Restore on Gadreel and Lele hit with Flatter before falling asleep.
And so began a repeated pattern of healing Gadreel, Yawning, and chucking Dusk balls. Gadreel nearly ran out of Yawn power and Nuztai ran out of Full Restores, but Tapu Lele eventually succumb to being captured. Nuztai headed down the stairs of the altar, stepped carefully through the shards of the 15 shattered Dusk balls, and picked up the one that contained Tapu Lele.
“Two down. Two more to go.” He said as he returned Gadreel to his Pokéball.
Nuztai received word that Ms. Wicke wished to exchange notes on the UBs Nuztai had encountered thus far. Not one to miss a chance to share knowledge, Nuztai headed to the Aether Paradise right away. After failing to locate Ms. Wicke, Nuztai headed to the Conservation Area. There, he encountered his new friend, Gladion.
“So you came…” Said Gladion as Nuztai approached. “I guess I’ve got to thank you again for all you’ve done for my family… Especially… for Lillie. I never knew she could smile like that.”
“You were just as important to that as anyone else, my friend.” replied Nuztai.
“Thank you.” responded a humbled Gladion. “My mother’s desires to reach Nihilego… and what she did in order to reach that goal… I know she was completely out of control. But that doesn’t mean I can’t understand it. It was my father who started it. He was the one who first confirmed the existence of Ultra Wormholes and Ultra Beasts.”
“That hardly seems like an explanation for going as crazy as your mother did.” scoffed Nuztai. “I’ve been around for some impressive extradimensional discoveries, and I’ve never seen a pot crack quite like that.”
“But my father…” responded a solemn Gladion. “He disappeared during an experiment. Trying to connect to an Ultra Wormhole. All that he left behind was a weakened Cosmog and his papers about Nihilego…”
“I see.” said a somber Nuztai. “So Lusamine’s obsession with Ultra Wormholes… and her obsession with the Ultra Beasts…”
“I think it was all basically her way of trying to reach him again.” Gladion said as if to finish Nuztai’s thought. “That’s what I had to believe. To get through it.”
The two stared quietly at each other for a moment, pondering the thought.
“It’s not an apology or anything, but… I hope you’ll take this fellow.” Gladion said, breaking the silence while handing Nuztai a Pokéball. “And I’ll give you all the memory drives that let its Evolution, Silvally, change its type…” Gladion added while handing over a stack of drives. “This is a different Type: Null. Not the same one that I ran away with… It was kept in Secret Lab A. Its very existence was a secret. But I think I can trust you to show it to the world.”
As Nuztai sent the Pokéball to his PC box and put the drives in his bag, Gladion went on. “Maybe it’s time I see a bit more of the world myself… and if the rumors I’m hearing are true, you’ll want to hasten your next trip, too.”
“Oh yeah” responded Nuzai. “I’m trying to accomplish my goal as fast as possible. I’m still deciding where to go next, though.”
“There’s no convincing you to give up your mission and just leave, is there?” Asked Gladion, already quite sure of the answer. “No matter. Good luck. And do hurry.”
