Moon Version, Part 27: An International Emergency!

Nuztai looked behind him from the back of charizard and watched the crowd approach and enter his home. He hoped Hau and his mother would be able to talk some sense into them, but he didn’t have much faith in it. When people get irrational, they’re hard to talk to at all. Charizard landed at the motel on Route 8. He checked the note again and confirmed this is where he was asked to meet. Part of him worried that this would be a trap, but he swallowed the feeling and knocked on the motel door.
Inside was a woman in a dark suit with purple hair and a man in a long brown trench coat who seemed keen on using lots of product.
“You made it…” said the woman as Nuztai entered.
“Nuztai, please, you’ll have to forgive me of my stunning disguise earlier.” Said the man in the trench coat.
“YOU were the old man!” exclaimed Nuztai, “That WAS a stunning disguise! But who are you people and why am I here?”
“My name… it is Looker. I am member of International Police.” Said Looker, an odd accent breaking out. “And this figure… She is my boss…”
“It is an honor, of course, First Champion of Alola and Seven League Champion.” responded the woman. “Please forgive our rude summons. My name is Anabel.”
“Actually, Looker’s timing probably saved me a lynching.” reassured Nuztai. “The town was on its way to find out if I captured their guardian deity.”
“I see. And did you?” Anabel asked.
“I did.” Nuztai calmly answered. “As part of my dexlocke mission to capture one of every native specie in the region.” Anabel and Looker exchanged a glance.
“I am head of a secret division within the International Police.” Stated Anabel. “We are the UB Task Force.”
“Forgive my interruption. Is it true that you encountered UB Symbiont?” Asked Looker.
“I’m afraid I don’t know what a UB is or a Symbiont.” Answered Nuztai.
“UBs are Ultra Beasts.” explained Anabel. “Life forms from another dimension. That Nihilego creature you encountered was one such a beast.”
“Hold up.” Nuztai began to get very excited. “You mean there ARE more creatures in the Ultra Dimension besides Nihilego?! What do you two know about the Ultra Dimension?”
“Just as we had thought…” said Anabel. “You have seen it then?”
“Only Nihilego. Not this Symbiont you asked about.” replied Nuztai. “I’d rather capture one for the ‘dex, though. And learn a bit more about the strange Ultra Space Dimension.”
“You were once assistant to dimension expert, Burnett, yes?” asked Looker.
“I was.” Nuztai’s face fell a bit at the question. “I learned a lot from her. But my passion is being in the field. I just can’t stand being stuck in a lab all the time, no matter how cool the subject matter.”
“Listen, everything that we are about to share with you is highly classified information.” States Anabel very seriously. “We must ask that you keep all that you learn here to yourself.” Anabel went on to explain that the incident caused by Lusamine created a rift in the dimensions all over the islands. Several UB broke through, and they need an expert in dimensions and capturing to aid them. The beings, they warned, are extremely dangerous, and may border the powers of our world’s legendary Pokémon. And, finding themselves suddenly in a new world, they will likely be scared and irrational.
Looker went on to explain their mission is finding and either capturing or eliminating them. They don’t know the creature’s motives for being here, so they need to prepare themselves for the worst. Nuztai insisted he would never allow that, and will capture them himself. They accepted that as his agreement to join their task force.
“If you agree to join us, I must ask for a battle. To test your power myself.” explained Anabel.
“You do understand you are challenging a Nuzlocker, right? Pokémon may die.” questioned Nuztai.
“I understand.” answered Anabel.
“Then let’s go!”
Nuztai and Anabel stepped outside and dropped Pokéballs. Alakazam now faced Rufus. Alakazam led with a Focus Blast, but Rufus dodged and Bit into Alakazam hard, flinging it like a rag doll across the parking lot. Anabel recalled the unconscious Pokémon and sent in Weavile. With blinding speed, Weavile ran up and hit Rufus with a Brick Break attack. Rufus held on and began to Play Rough, which was more than Weavile could handle. Weavile was swapped for Mismagius, who shot an Energy Ball for a direct hit. But a moment later, Rufus burst through the settling dust and Bit deeply into Mismagius, knocking her out.
Looker stood on the sidelines stunned by Nuztai’s show of power. As Nuztai withdrew the hurt Rufus, Anabel sent in Snorlax. Nuztai responded with Whirly, who immediately darted forward and knocked the giant Pokémon over with a backhanded Wake-Up Slap. Snorlax only Yawned on the ground, and Whirly finished it with another Wake-Up Slap… But then Whirly went down too. Not unconscious, but to sleep.
The two trainers withdrew their Pokémon and the final round began. Metatron burst forth to face Anabel’s Salamence. Nuztai saw an opportunity and activated Metatron’s Z-Move, Devastating Drake. As the lightning quick purple dragon-shaped energy zipped around, Salamence tried desperately to outmaneuver it. But it was no use. The blast slammed into Salamence, who was sent hurtling towards the ground, crashing just outside the parking lot. But Salamace was still up and shot back towards Metatron, biting into it with Thunder Fang. The pained and panicked Pokémon reared back and kicked Salamence off it with a Dragon Claw, sending it falling again, this time not to get back up.
Anabel praised Nuztai’s skills as they returned to the hotel room. Once inside, they explained what they needed of him for now: To go to the secret labs in the basement of Aether Paradise and meet their ally, Ms. Wicke.
“But I must warn you, Nuztai.” said Anabel. “Word will spread quickly of the First Alolan Champion’s betrayal and capture of Tapu Koko. I suggest haste in completing all you need to do here and leave immediately. In the meantime, do not get spotted, or people will assume you seek to capture all their gods.”
“Right… ‘Assume’...” mumbled Nuztai as he walked out the door.
“Ms. Wicke!” called Nuztai as the elevator slowly lowered to the basement floor. Ms. Wicke looked up from her clip board and smiled up at Nuztai.
“Welcome back!” she said “I have to tell you how much I appreciate what you did for Miss Lillie. She asked a favor of me before she left. She wanted me to explain why she left for Kanto.”
“Wait, back-up, why she WHAT NOW?!” Shouted Nuztai in shock as he stepped off the elevator.
“She left for Kanto. She said she was planning to stop by and say good-bye to you and Hau. Did she not?” Asked a confused Ms. Wicke.
“I’m afraid there was… an incident. It would have been hard for her to catch us.”
“I see.” said Ms. Wicke. “I’m sorry to have told you this way then. But it seems Nihilego’s neurotoxins, or perhaps it’s fusion with Madame Lusamine, or the strain of the Z-power… something caused undeniably ill effects on Madame Lusamine’s mind and body from this encounter. She has hardly roused since.”
“Seems fitting.” scoffed Nuztai.
“Ah, but you know Miss Lillie is far too kind-hearted to just ignore it. She found a ray of hope in a book that she remembered reading long ago. It was regarding a man named Bill, who invented the Pokémon Storage System used in our PCs.”
“I know Bill well.” added Nuztai. “He’s an extremely clever inventor.”
“That is exactly the hope. It seems he once combined himself with a Pokémon in an experiment that apparently went awry…”
“Yeah, it scared the crap out of me to walk in on a talking Pokémon! But he was able to explain what I needed to do to help change him back.” Laughed Nuztai.
“YOU WERE THERE!” exclaimed Wicke
“Well, yeah. It was pretty startling. But Bill and I became pretty good friends after that. But what does he have to do with Lillie and Lusamine?” asked Nuztai.
“Well, his records of the event say he was separated from the Pokémon by using his Teleporter and a Cell Separation System. Perhaps using the same kind of procedure on Madame Lusamine will be able to remove the last of the beast’s poisons from her system. That is what Miss Lillie was hoping when she headed to Kanto.”
“Interesting hypothesis. I’m sure Bill will be more than willing to give it a shot. But it will be hard with what little info we have on Nihilego. And Kanto can be a dangerous place to wander, especially making one’s way to Bill’s Cape.”
“She plans on meeting with Professor Oak and receiving a starting Pokémon, beginning a journey of her own.”
“Good for her.” Smiled Nuztai. “She’ll be a fine trainer.”
Ms. Wicke led Nuztai to Secret Lab B as she reminisced about Lillie and Gladion and how proud she was of the people they’d become. As they arrived, Nuztai turned the conversation back to the UBs.
“Disclosing info on this is prohibited, so let’s please keep this between you and me. First, take these.” explained Wicke as she handed ten oddly shaped blue Pokéballs to Nuztai. “Interpol asked me to pass them to you. The Aether Foundation developed those in great secrecy.”
Nuztai opened one and began examining it thoroughly. “Judging by the materials used and simple soldering methods, I assume these are all individually hand-made? It seems the capture net frequency they emit uses a special wave-length. No, a combination of wavelengths… Ingenious, but these wavelengths wouldn’t be much good... And the digital life support system is even unique, I assume creating a different virtual environment? But all that said, this looks like it would be worse than a standard mass-produced Pokéball at catching your average Pokémon.”
“We call them Beast Balls.” added Ms Wicke, and Nuztai’s eyes widened with understanding.
“I see, that explains it. These details are specially designed to capture something not of this world. I’m surprised I didn’t put that together faster.”
“They are very hard to make, so please consider your timing very carefully for when you will use them during a battle. The appearance of the UBs is something that we at the foundation are to blame for… That is why I will do whatever is within my power to assist you in this. For now, perhaps you should return to Ms. Anabel at the motel in Akala. She may have discovered new info for you.”
“Welcome back” said Anabel as Nuztai entered the hotel room. “I’ve just finished recruiting a couple more trainers for our task. Looker is out gathering intel. It would seem that you managed to meet with Ms. Wicke.
“É un disastro!” Shouted Looker as he burst in the door.
“Is… something the matter, Mr. Looker?” asked a startled Anabel. “If you spoke in English, I might understand. What has you so bothered?”
“Sorry! There are sightings being reported of UB-01! It is Symbiont!” Exclaimed Looker. “It is in Akala. Right under noses!”
“Understood.” replied a calm Anabel. “My task will be to protect the populated areas. Nuztai, you will go to where the sighting was reported. Mr. Looker, you will stay here and coordinate the other trainers should more UBs show up while we’re out. This is a vital role, Mr. Looker.” With that, Nuztai and Anabel took off to the reported sighting. As they got outside, Nuztai explained he needed to make a quick detour and would meet her there, summoning Charizard with his ride pager and taking off.
Nuztai entered Diglett’s Tunnel and immediately came upon the beast. He led with Whirly, who traded Poison Jabs with Nihilego’s Power Gem assault. Once whittled to low HP, Nuztai switched to Gadreel. He then made use of the reason for his detour, teaching Gadreel Yawn! While Nihilego’s Power Gem attacks severely weakened Gadreel quickly, Nihilego fell asleep, and Nuztai caught it with one of the special Beast Balls.
“If all the beasts are this easy,” Nuztai thought to himself, “This will be no problem.”
