“You’ve come a long way!” Said Kukui with voice of pride. “You’ve made it through all the trials and grand trials that make up the island challenge! Congratulations!

“Aren’t you cold, dressed like that?” asked a puzzled Nuztai as he approached Kukui at the door of the Pokémon League.

“HAHA! You’re up here in a tank top and shorts and you wonder why I am cold?” Laughed Kukui. “My soul burns hot, yeah - hotter than a Blast Burn even!”

“Huh. I guess the sheer adrenaline of this HAS been keeping me warm…” Nuztai mumbled to himself.

“This is where the fun starts. Mount Lanakila is where we’ve always finished the island challenge. So, we’ve built our Pokémon League right up here, as high as we could get to show our respect for the Legendary Pokémon and to honor it. I still remember the day I arrived at the Indigo Plateau…”

“You fought the Indigo League?” Asked Nuztai.

“Yeah, those Gym Leaders in Kanto really messed my team and me up! But then I saw my team battling for me through it all, pouring their souls into their moves for me…”

“I hate to stop your reminiscing…” interrupted Nuztai.

“No, you’re right! Let’s get you inside!” Laughed Kukui, and they marched inside the building. Inside, Kukui explained the four doorways leading to each of the Elite Four, and that after the keys in each room had been activated, a portal would open leading to the Champion’s Chamber. Nuztai walked through the first door to begin his challenge.

“HALA!” cried Nuztai as he realized who stood across the room. “Y-you’re… an Elite Four!”

“HAHA!” Laughed Hala, “I gave you a better fight than any other Kahuna and you have the nerve to ask me that! Hell, I was going to GIVE you that Ride Pager to call that Tauros before you STOLE it! If it weren’t for my grandson, I’d have pressed charges.”

“Oh… I, uh…” Nuztai stumbled on just what to say.

“Save it! Beat me here, going all out, and I’ll ignore the events of the past. Lose, and I assure you, you’re going to be so far behind bars they’ll have to pipe sunshine to ya!”

Hala led with Hariyama and was met with Nuztai’s Metatron. While it stalled for a round with Fake Out, Metatron still got an amazing Aerial Ace in and took the giant Pokémon down. Hala sent in Crabominable, and Nuztai suddenly realized how bad an ice type attack could be for Metatron. He swapped him for Gadreel, who dodged the incoming Ice Hammer attack with grace most don’t foresee from a Slowbro. Gadreel then surprised again by using its Flamethrower attack, knocking Crabominable out.

Hala couldn’t believe how far Nuztai had come since their last battle. He decided to add the fear factor. Primeape erupted from the next Pokéball. The horror of the damage the Pokémon did to Nuztai’s team made him take pause. Primeape launched a Pursuit, but Gadreel was unphased. Nuztai’s fear turned to boiling anger, and Gadreel’s eyes glowed as it used its Psychic powers, instantly knocking Primeape out. Hala sent in Bewear, but Nuztai and Gadreel were too much in sync for it to have a chance. Bewear hit with a Brutal Swing attack, injuring Gadreel, but it was too little, too late. Gadreel’s Z-power triggered, and Bewear became a victim of Gadreel’s Shattered Psyche attack.

Hala was now down to his final Pokémon. Nuztai was ready to see Gadreel finish this. As Hala sent in Poliwrath, Nuztai healed Gadreel with a Hyper Potion. Poliwrath unleashed the power of a Waterfall, but Gadreel bent the water around it with its mind. Poliwrath charged while Gadreel was distracted and hit with a Submission attack, but all it did was bring Poliwrath closer within range of Gadreel’s Psychic attack. Poliwrath held on, this time connecting with a Waterfall. But as the water settled, Gadreel stood unharmed, and finished Poliwrath with a final Psychic attack.

Hala shook Nuztai’s hand, wished him the best of luck, and activated the key in the back of the room, warping Nuztai back to the main room. The center now had a faint glow as energy flowed from Hala’s room.

“Nuztai! I’ve heard terrible news about the fate of your dear starter Pokémon. My condolences.” Said Olivia as Nuztai entered the Rock Chamber.

“Save it. You’re excited to some degree. You think maybe this time I’ll have to show you more than one Pokémon.” bantered Nuztai. “Not gonna happen.” Nuztai took off his belt of Pokéballs, removed one, and tossed it aside. “I was offered the position of Gym Leader once, did you know?”

“Oh yeah? Haha! What was your type? Cocky type?”

“Close. WATER!” Shouted Nuztai as he sent in Whirly. Nuztai was bluffing to a degree. He didn’t actually know if Whirly would be enough against Olivia at her best. But he was sure as hell ready to try.

Olivia led with Relicanth who used Yawn on Whirly. “You’ll have to swap out, now! Or your dear Poliwrath with be sleeping with the fishes!” called Olivia. It was well played. But Nuztai wasn’t about to let her have her way. Whirly charged in with a Wake-up Slap, cracking Relicanth’s stone faceplate. Whirly yawned wide. Relicanth blasted a Hydro Pump at Whirly, who leapt into the air, dodging it, and came crashing down with a Wake-up Slap that filled the arena with dust. As it settled, Relicanth was unconscious, and Whirly asleep.

Olivia sent in Carbink, and Nuztai had a moment of inspiration. “Whirly! LUNCH IS READY!” He yelled, and Whirly’s eyes popped open. Nuztai pulled the Big Malasada out that Hau and given him and tossed it to Whirly, who ate the whole thing in one gulp. Carbink created a reflective barrier in anticipation of Whirly’s attack. Whirly turned and blasted a Hydro Pump, sending Carbink spinning in the air. As it steadied itself, it launched a blast of its own, a powerful Moonbeam that struck Whirly hard. Whirly attempted to hit Carbink again, but it dodged carefully, and shot another successful Moonbeam. Whirly wasn’t looking good. Nintai used a Hyper Potion to bring it to speed, and Carbink continued it’s Moonbeam barrage. Whirly toughed through and struck Carbink with another Hydro Pump, finishing it off.

“Time to finish that thing!” Cried Olivia as she sent in Golem. Nuztai shuddered as he realized the Alolan form was an electric type. He needed it to go down quickly. He activated Whirly’s Z-move, Hydro Vortex, decimating Golem, but it held on with its Sturdy ability. Golem rolled up to Whirly, sparks flying, and popped up to deliver a powerful Thunder Punch. Whirly skid backward from the force of the punch, stopping right at Nuztai’s feet. Nuztai sprayed a Max Potion while he had the chance. Olivia responded with a Full Restore on Golem. The two charged each other, Whirly hitting with a Wake-up Slap, Golem responding with a Thunder Punch. Whirly blasted a Hydro Pump, but Golem rolled out of the way, circled around and landed another Thunder Punch.

Nuztai used Full Restore, but Whirly was struck by another Thunder Punch. Whirly smacked in another Wake-up Slap, traded with another Thunder Punch. Whirly caught Golem’s tiny fist, shocked by the electricity. As the lightning faded, Whirly’s eyes opened with an angry glare right into Golem’s face. His other arm reared back bashed Golem with a final Wake-up Slap, knocking Golem unconscious.

Olivia was rightfully shocked. Nuztai put on a smug face, but deep down, he was scared for Whirly’s life. It could barely stand now, and he’d be starting the next round with several steps of healing. Olivia sent in Probopass. As Probopass barragged Whirly with Earth Power, Thunder Wave, and Sandstorm, Nuztai used a Max Potion, Leppa Berry, and Cheri Berry, respectively. Whirly got in a restored Hydro Pump, but Probopass was determined to keep Whirly paralyzed with Thunderwave. Nuztai kept the Cheri Berries handy and tossed another to Whirly. Cured, Whirly lept forward and Wake-up Slapped Probopass across the arena.

As Olivia sent in Lycanroc, the Sandstorm subsided. Whirly and Lycanroc wasted no time, trading a Wake-up Slap for a Rock Climb for another Wake-up Slap, but Lycanroc stood no chance against such powerful Fighting Type power, and hit the ground. Nuztai and Whirly stood victorious.

Olivia took a long, deep breath, and sighed. “It seems if I want to see more of your Pokémon battle, I’ll have to watch your future matches.” Olivia walked up and shook Nuztai’s hand. “Go all the way, Kiddo.”

Urked by being called ‘Kiddo’, Nuztai responded with a “Yes, Ma’am” and lightning could be seen between the glares they exchanged.
