“Zenryoku Energy, the power behind so called ‘Z-moves’, is a form of latent nature energy that taps into the potential energy of living creatures.” Explained Professor Burnett. She was nearly yelling so as to ensure Professor Kukui could still hear her over the sounds of the boat crashing against the waves. She was running the engine as hard as she could given the terrible waves that were kicking up.
“You and I met while studying Z-Energy, remember? I’m familiar with it.” replied Kukui in his booming baritone. “What does this have to do with Nuztai?”
“The guardian spirits of the Alola Islands,” Burnett went on, “are said to have used that energy to defend the islands against an attack from a powerful creature that came through an Ultra Wormhole. They combined their potential energy with the potential energy of the most promising humans on each island, now known as the Kahuna, using their dance rituals. It allowed them to stave off the attack.”
“I’m familiar with the story.” said Kukui with growing frustration. “I’m still not seeing the connection.”
“That’s because you failed History.” Growled Burnett. “Times were very different back then. Blood rituals were commonplace on the islands and many historians theorize that sacrifices were part of the original z-move dances. In fact, the first island trials were NUZLOCKES!”
Kukui’s face lit up with horror at this information. He looked to Professor Burnett wide-eyed and slack-jawed as the pieces fell to place in his mind.
“LOOK! On the docks! Isn’t that them!” Shouted Burnett as they approached the Malie City port.
“I warned you they might be nearly done with their trials on the island by the time I could get you and come back. Looks like they’re about to leave!” Yelled Kukui as Burnett slowed the boat to dock at the damaged port near Nuztai, Hau, and Gladion. The trio turned to see the professors as they pulled in. Burnett quickly rose from the boat and began calling out to Nuztai.
“I know, I know.” reassured Nuztai. “Hau just found out and filled me in. I assume you’ve figured out how Nuzlocking here is causing accelerated Ultra Wormholes, too?”
Professor Burnett froze and stared into space for a moment. She hadn’t figured that out. But the pieces are all there. As they began assembling in her mind, Nuztai began to walk with Hau and Gladion towards Gladion’s black Team Skull boat. Burnett snapped out of her thoughts and asked where they were all going. Hau began to fill them in on the abduction of Lillie and Cosmog.
“There’s no time to lose.” Shouted Gladion from his boat to the others. “We’ve lost enough time as it is. Clearly you rushed here because you have something important to discuss. When we’re done, we’ll meet on Poni Island. You can all talk as long as you want then.”
“But..!”
“Let them go, hon.” Kukui interrupted his wife and motioned for her to come back to their boat. “You know as well as I do that Cosmog cannot stay in the wrong hands. We’ve got to trust them.”
Hau and Nuztai jumped into Gladion’s boat and he began to drive off toward Aether Paradise.
Gladion slowed the boat to a low hum and slipped into the docking area. With all the large ships and noise, it was easy to slip through and dock at a lower platform. As Gladion began to tie off the boat, Nuztai and Hau confronted him.
“Ok, I give. Why are we here?” Asked Hau. “I thought team Skull had Lillie. Are we here to get backup or something?”
“No.” Answered Gladion solemnly. “Lillie is here.”
“Why would she be here? Where is she?” inquired Hau. “I see no reason to believe this guy, Nuztai!”
“Do you have any other leads, Hau?” questioned Nuztai. “I was in Po Town the whole time, so she isn’t there. Besides, If we’re lucky, we can look around and they won’t even know we’re looking for a kidnapped person thanks to our last visit.”
“Don’t be so sure.” stated Gladion, pointing as he stepped out of the boat at the security that was running down the docks to them. “We need to battle our way to the elevator!”
Gladion sent out Golbat, Nuztai released Dean, and Hau, Alolan Raichu. They engaged the guards and battled their way to the elevator. Gladion tried to access the lower floors, but the system refused him.
“We don’t have any choice. We’ll have to go up” He announced, and the elevator hummed as it began to ascend. As it crested the floor, they could see the bug like head of Faba, the Aether Branch Manager.
“That’ll be enough of this intrusion!” announced Faba as he sent out his Hypno. Dean crashed into it immediately with an Aqua Jet. As Hypno regained its footing, it attempted a Hypnosis, which Dean countered with a siren Hyper Voice that knocked Hypno out. Faba looked stunned.
“Now where is Cosmog!” Demanded Gladion.
“Fine, I suppose it may be downstairs. That’s where the experiments are held.” Faba responded with ire.
“We’re in a bit of a hurry, Faba.” Groaned Gladion. “A lift would be nice.” and he motioned to the elevator controls.
“Fine. You did win, after all.”
“Wow, it’s like a hidden lair!” exclaimed Hau as they arrived.
“Don’t get too excited, Hau.” called Gladion, “Though I guess it is better than being frozen in fear. There are two labs up ahead. I’ll check the first, you two check the second. GO!”
As they ran forward, Hau turned to Nuztai and asked, “Hey, how does he know this stuff?”
Nuztai turned and responded, “I think it’s obvious he’s been here before. Maybe this is where they made him?” Nuztai was dying from laughter inside as the look he got from Hau was priceless. Kids can be so gullible
They battled through the officials and made their way into the lab. Inside, they began reading all they could find.
“Check this out, Hau!” exclaimed Nuztai as he read a file from the computer. “According to this, Cosmog may actually be an Ultra Beast. And one that can summon Wormholes, no less!”
“I’m going to go inform Gladion! Keep researching!” yelled Hau as he raced out the door.
“Wait!” hollered Nuztai, but it was too late. He got up and ran out the door after him. Hau was almost back to the elevator already. As Nuztai passed the other lab, he came to a halt. Something was driving him to look inside. He peered his head inside and looked around. No one seemed to be there, but there was a cornered-off glass room within it, that looked to be for housing creatures. While the inside looked to have been scoured clean, there were still notable scratches and scuffs everywhere. On the bookshelf next to it were lab binders filled with hand written reports and notes. Nuztai opened one to a random page and his eye immediately found the words “Type: Full”.
