Moon Version, Part 15: The Strands Unravel

Nuztai used the Ride Pager to fly back to the Aether House. While Yungoos jumps off Nuztai’s shoulder happy to see the kids again, the kid’s dire expression as Nuztai enters says it all. Hau walks in from the back, wearing bandages and a sling. He looks up and gives Nuztai a look of dread.
The door burst open behind Nuztai, breaking the silence.
“Lillie! Where is she?!” Yells Gladion.
“They took her.” says a weak Hau. “There was nothing I could do.”
“WHY COULDN’T YOU JUST TELL ME SHE HAD COSMOG!” Exclaims an exasperated Gladion. “I could have protected her! You’re all too weak and now they have Cosmog!”
“Then we’ll get her back.” replies a stern Nuztai. “I won’t let them have her or Cosmog!”
“I don’t think you have what it takes!” shouts Gladion. “You already said you’d protect them and look what happened! Battle me and prove you’ve got the mettle!”
Gladion sent out Golbat, but Zeus made quick work of it. Then came the mysterious Type: Null who put up a decent fight before getting knocked out as well. Nuztai returned Zeus and switched to Bobby, who’s Brick Break was more than Gladion’s Sneasel could handle.
“Fine.” remarked a calmer Gladion. “Meet me at Malie City’s Ferry terminal and we’ll go after them.”
Nuztai left the Malie City Pokémon Center and started his walk to the docks. The sun shone brightly and people passed him with smiles on their faces. But Nuztai couldn’t bring himself to partake of it. He’d been lured away as a distraction, and let a friend get kidnapped for her Pokémon. He just couldn’t shake the guilt. And it really pissed him off.
Gladion stood at the edge of the pier as had been agreed. As Nuztai approached, he wondered where Hau was. Would he still come, despite his injuries?
“You there.” said a voice from behind Nuztai. He spun around with Gladion to see who called. It was a hunched old man in a tattered police uniform.
“Officer Nanu?” Said a surprised Gladion.
“Officer Who-Now?” asked a confused Nuztai.
“I’m the island kahuna.” Said Nanu. “ And you have skipped my Grand Trial. You aren’t to leave until we battle.” With all the effort of an old man tossing bird seed to pidgeys, Nanu tossed his Pokéball and sent out Sableye, whom Nuztai met with Bobby. Sableye’s Power Gem gathered brilliant energy before flying toward Bobby and bouncing harmlessly off his soft belly. Bobby’s Lick was less forgiving, clearly weakening Sableye and paralysing it. A cloud of mist suddenly covered Sableye and healed him from the paralysis, and Nuztai realized Nanu had used a Full Heal without much of a motion. Bobby’s Lick attacks persisted, and eventually knocked out Sableye.
Nanu sent out Krokorok to take Sableye’s place, and the entire dock area shook with the power of its Earthquake attack. Bobby struggled for balance for a moment, slashing with a huge wake as he fell into the water. Nuztai and Gladion watched in horror to see if Bobby had truly sank… SPLASH a huge form burst from the sea, spraying mist everywhere. As everyone covered their eyes, Bobby came hurtling down with a Brick Break that smashed Krokorok into the pavement.
Nanu recalled the unconscious Pokémon and sent out an Alolan Persian. It quickly grew a powerful Z aura and black hole appeared in the sky above the battle. Rubble from the wrecked docks and water began pulling into the black hole, and the rock Bobby stood on even lifted as well. As Bobby looked around in momentary panic, he began to jump from rock to rock, coming down onto Persian with a whopping Brick Break, and the hole disappeared. But Persian wasn’t through yet, and blasted Bobby away with a Dark Pulse. Visibly weak, Bobby shook the ground as he fell to a knee. Nuztai recalled Bobby and sent Dean to finish it. Dean summoned power and launched a Moonblast toward Persian, who began summoning Power Gems to try to stave off the blast. The stones crumbled in contact with the beam and blasted Persian into the water.
Nanu recalled the Pokémon and turned to Nuztai, showing the creepiest smirk Nuztai had ever seen.
“That battle energy. It pleases the Tapu.” Nanu stated in a droll, monotone. “It gives them the strength to defend this world.”
“You means fuels their bloodlust.” Came a familiar voice from the street above the docks. Hau stood looking down at the group. “I stopped at the library and did a little digging. Looks like your hunch was right, Nuztai.”
