Nuztai walked past the bus stop and trudged his way the hard way up from route 10 to Mount Hokulani, where his next trial awaited. Along the way, a floating new Pokémon appeared, and Nuztai quickly aimed to make it a new team member. Bobby the Snorlax whittled it down with his Hold Back until it was weak, where it’s outer shell began to fall off, revealing a shining blue core. But it was not to be this day. The creature, feeling threatened, used Self Destruct. Bobby survived the blast with ease, but Nuztai was saddened to lose the chance at a new Pokémon on his team.
He became momentarily fascinated by the Minior, and began catching them for his living dex as he climbed the mountain. He’d gathered 6 of the 7 different colors by the time he reached the Pokémon Center at the Summit.
After healing his Pokémon, Nuztai was pumped to begin his trial. As he approached the observatory, he saw someone standing at the edge of the summit, lost in the view. It was Professor Kukui, staring at distant mountaintop. Nuztai quietly approached and stood next to him, and the two stared into the distance together for a moment.
“That’s the peak of Mount Lanakila.” Said Kukui, breaking the silence. “My dream is build the Alola region it’s own Pokémon League on that spot.”
“That’s a beautifully lofty goal, Professor.” replied Nuztai. “The region is big enough. The trainers seem strong enough. Why, then you’d be able to certify trainers with badges so they can legally use moves like Fly with their own Pokémon.”
“You DO understand. I knew you would.” Kukui stood from stooped posture on the railing. He stepped over to Nuztai and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. “I’ll need help, you know. Nuzlockers draw a crowd in Pokémon Leagues.”
“Say no more. You build a true league here, I’ll Nuzlocke it. I’m not sure I can do it any other way anymore.”
“I appreciate it, Nuztai.” Kukui said with a smile. “But now, you’ve a trial to complete. Good luck!”
Nuztai entered the observatory, where he met the former captain, Molayne. Molayne challenged Nuztai to a test battle, but Lucifer the Salandit scorched through Molayne’s steel types with incredible ease. Further in, Nuztai met Sophocles, a young genius with numerous inventions to his name. Sophocles seemed nervous about Nuztai’s challenge and offered to cut to the chase, using his new invention to summon the totem Pokémon right to their location.
“So you plan to send it out using a Pokéball?” inquired Nuztai.
“No, no, you can’t capture totem Pokémon or they lose their totem connection to nature and are no longer totem Pokémon!” explained Sophocles. “I haven’t been a captain long. In fact, you’re my first challenger, so I’ve never used this device in such a setting. You’ll be sort of like my guinea pig!”
“What in the Distortion World is guinea pig?” asked a confused Nuztai.
“Never mind that, I just press this aaaannnd…” Sophocles pressed buttons and turned knobs and… VOOOmmm… The room went dark. A moment later, red emergency lights came on in the corners, providing minimal lighting. “Oops. It must need more power than I thought. I guess I blew a breaker.”
“Looks like the security system activated. The door shut and locked us in.” stated Nuztai as he looked around to get his bearings. As he felt around the door for a switch or handle to pull, something slammed against the other side of the door, knocking Nuztai back several steps.
“The Totem Pokémon must be here!” exclaimed an ecstatic Sophocles. “Despite the breaker, the machine worked! Get your Pokémon ready! I’ll hack the security system and open the door.”
“Yeah, sure… that seems perfectly safe.” Nuztai grabbed a Pokéball from his belt and tossed it toward the door just as Sophocles managed to open it. Lucifer was ready, and belted a Flamethrower attack at the Totem Vikavolt as it blasted into the room with several Charjabug behind it. The Pokémon seemed to attack Lucifer all at once, but he kept belting fire all around him, scorching his attackers until there were no more.
VOOM The power came back on, and Molayne came running into the room. He was glad to see his cousin was OK after seeing all the Pokémon burst into the observatory and into Sophocles’ lab. The pair bestowed Nuztai with a Steelium Z and a Electrum Z.
Nuztai left the mountain, this time by bus. He’d promised to meet Kukui at Malie Gardens and was running out of time…
