Moon Version Dexlocke Chosen Rules

Note from Nintai: This was the original post to sort of make my Nuzlocke run official on the Nuzlocke sub-reddit. While it isn't really required anywhere, I did it mostly for me, both to have a reference and to have accountability. At this point, I wasn't expecting to do a story. I had scripted a short set of comics for my Red Version Dexlocke that I never got around to drawing, and was more planning to just post some occasional updates to note progress. Again, just to keep me accountable (otherwise, I was afraid I'd set the game down, not pick it up for a few months, and forget I was Nuzlocking at all).

The following will be my rules moving forward with my Moon Version Dexlocke. I've desperately tried to avoid spoilers, so if you see a rule that needs tweaking for some unknown feature of Moon version, please comment in as spoiler free of a fashion as you can muster. Questions and comments encouraged to help improve clarity.

Death Rule: Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be transferred to the Pokemon Bank Box “Cemetery”

Dexlocke Rule: The goal is to catch all 80+ new Pokemon possible in Moon Version in a living 'dex. I am only seeking Pokémon new to this generation, but in all possible forms and evolutions. I will also attempt to catch and add new forms of old Pokémon unique to this generation. Pokemon captured as team members do not count toward the living ‘dex.

First Encounter Rule and Nickname Rule: The player must catch and nickname the first Pokémon encountered in an area, and only these nicknamed Pokémon may be used in battle. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances. Other Pokémon must go directly to the living 'dex.

Black Out Rule (lite): A blackout is considered to be "game over" only if there are no nicknamed Pokémon left in the PC. I will personally still consider this a failed Nuzlocke, though.

Restricted Trading Rule: Trading is permissible only for the purposes of obtaining version exclusive Pokémon for the living dex. GTS is not permissible at all. Trades must be with a trainer willing to trade a version exclusive Pokémon from Sun version with a version exclusive Pokémon from Moon version.

Gift Pokémon Rule: The player may accept Pokémon that are received freely from NPCs.

Reset Rule: Voluntarily resetting and reloading the game when things go wrong is Prohibited. Being able to do so would render all of the other rules pointless.

Dupes Clause: A tweak to the First Encounter Rule to prevent the player from having to catch multiple of the same Pokémon, for the sake of variety. Generally this means that the trainer can keep fighting Pokémon in the area until one is encountered that has not been caught yet, which then immediately counts as the first encounter. One may catch a duplicate first encounter if they so choose.

Breeding Clause: Breeding is acceptable only for the purposes of completing the living ‘dex.

The Pokéball Clause: Not officially enforcing the rules until the player has PokéBalls and can catch Pokémon, and not counting any other encounters as such until they can catch. Likewise, in the games where the rival battle is immediately after getting the starter Pokémon, the Death Rule is not enforced at that time.

-proven to be totally unnecessary in this gen.

NPC Trading Clause: NPC trades may be performed for two reasons. The first is to obtain a Pokémon for the living 'dex. The second is if the NPC asks for a nicknamed Pokémon on the Nuzlocker's team, and the player is willing to make the trade. In the later case, the traded Pokémon may be used on the Nuzlocker's team.

Routes-as-a-Whole Clause:

Trials Clause: Encounters during trials will not count as per the First Encounter Rule in the area, since capturing is rendered impossible. Once the trial is over, however, the First Encounter Rule resumes.

Mystery Gift Pokémon Rule: Pokémon received from Nintendo events via Mystery Gift that are less than level 50 may be nicknamed and used in battle.

Island Scan Rule: The use of the Island Scan is forbidden. Possible exception may be if there is a Gen 7 Pokémon or Alolan Form that is only obtainable through it's use.

I will be posting updates on Dexlocke progress as often as I can.
